The Long Version

Surfboard leashes are perhaps one of the biggest talking points in the world of freesurfing. Some people love them, a lot of people hate them, and the majority of crowded surf beaches need them.

But whether you like them or not, they will always serve.

At a very basic level, for lazy surfers like me, a leash keeps your board attached to you, so you never have to swim far to retrieve it after a wipeout. This is actually crucial on bigger days, when the waves break farther offshore. A leash can save you from getting exhausted swimming to the edge to retrieve your board.

Leashes also protect others from your board – something especially vital when learning to surf on a busy beach or battling for waves on a crowded point break.

They can also protect your board from impact, whether it's hitting other people, other boards, or getting stuck in rocks or piers.

All in all, the added security of a surf leash can sometimes give you an overconfidence to push yourself out of your comfort zone and try new maneuvers - and that doesn't. don't want that?

Of course, there are many surf leashes out there and it can be quite difficult to find the right one for you. But don't worry, we've compiled a list of the best leashes of 2023 for you, below.

Service name

Length: 6', 7', 8' and 9'

Board type: Shortboards and longboards (depending on chosen cord length)

Key pocket: Yes

The Ocean and Earth Premium One XT is made from a single piece, which means there are no weak points - or at least fewer weak points than most other leashes! This is the strongest leash in 2023.

On most surfboard leashes, the weakest points are the two end junctions which are usually connected to the main cord using heat treatment.

However, the Premium One XT uses a single piece of urethane that is extruded (i.e. molded) so no end seals are required.

This should help increase the durability and lifespan of the leash, so you'll have more peace of mind when using it in bigger waves.

Considered one of the toughest leashes in the world, the Ocean and Earth Premium One XT is built to last, making it an ideal choice for surfers who want to invest in a leash for durability.

Service name

Leash length: 6'

Board type: Shortboard

Key pocket: No

The FCS Freedom is made from a new cord material which results in a leash that is thinner and lighter but still just as strong. Rather than using the usual urethane cord, FCS took a thinner polyurethane cord and over-braided nylon.

The combination of polyurethane interior and braided nylon exterior achieves a better balance between strength and weight. This leash is not recommended for big wave surfing or longboards, but for the average shortboard surfer riding smaller waves (eg less than 1m50), the FCS Freedom is an excellent choice. Since it is thinner and lighter, you will notice reduced drag.

It has a super comfortable neoprene ankle cuff that has a Velcro strap and a quick release tab. The inside of the ankle is also silicone to prevent slipping. You will notice that the tail guard is thinner and lighter than that found on a leash designed for big waves.

One thing to be wary of - and this might be a deal breaker for some - is that there's no key pocket in the ankle cuff, due to the lightweight and streamlined design. Look in your wetsuit, you'll have to have one otherwise.

Material: Plastic (100% recycled)

Leash length: 5'6", 6', 7', 8' and 9'

Types of boards: Shortboards, longboards and SUPS (depending on the chosen cord length)

Key pocket: Yes

The Wave Tribe Eco Leash is made with all recycled plastic bottles, making it the perfect choice for the eco-conscious surfer in you!

If you're worried about the strength of recycled plastic, don't worry. The story goes that this leash was tested by pulling a van around a parking lot - the leash was stretched to the max and always returned to its original condition. This may not be lab validation, but it sounds pretty convincing to me!

This leash features a one-year warranty, triple pivot and tangle-free technology, a key slot, and superglue velcro that won't come undone in even the worst impacts.

The Adahub leash offers excellent value for money, as it is inexpensive and will last you a long time, especially if you are a beginner.

It can take a lot of wear and tear and rough riding. This leash is 5.5mm thick, which makes it a bit lighter.

If you need a leash fast and don't want to spend too much money. This is the leash that suits you best.

The Dakine John John Florence Comp features stainless steel swivels, removable rail saver, hook-and-loop closure and super comfortable neoprene ankle cuff.

The leash is only 5mm thick but still extremely strong.

However, being such a thin leash, it is super lightweight. Designed to withstand big waves, this leash won't take up much space when traveling or add weight to your bags.

It's available in five colors - so you can dial in your style - and comes in plastic-free packaging so you can feel a little more eco-conscious.
